What Gaunt is
Gaunt, Inc. is a distributor and subscription agent for English-language legal material published outside the United States. We are not a general library vendor with a foreign department. Foreign law is the whole business, and has been since 1946.
That means a law librarian ordering an Australian monograph, a South African law report and an Irish journal places one order, receives one invoice, and has one person to call when a volume does not arrive.
Why a distributor still matters
It is tempting to assume the internet solved foreign acquisitions. It did not. A publisher in Cape Town or Sydney may not accept a US purchase order, may not invoice in dollars, and may not know what a library approval plan is. Import paperwork, freight and currency remain real.
More importantly, someone has to know the material. Series change name. Volumes skip years. Titles that appear in a catalogue were never actually published. Eighty years of handling these specific publishers is knowledge that no search index reproduces.
Reprints
Our own reprint programme returns legal classics to print — treatises, trials, law reports and legal history that libraries need in hard copy and that no one else keeps available.
Reprints are produced to library specification on acid-free paper in a durable binding, and are made to order rather than warehoused. If a title is listed in our catalogue, it can be produced.
How to work with us
Search the catalogue and add anything you are considering to a quote list, then send it in one request. We will come back with current prices, availability and freight, usually within one business day.
We accept institutional purchase orders, set up standing orders and continuations, and will quote against a want list of any length. If we cannot get something, we will tell you plainly rather than leave an order open.
